Black Rock Desert is located in an unpopulated area of uncontrolled airspace, making it ideal for orbital, suborbital, and experimental launches.

Notable Events:
2004 – The Civilian Space eXploration Team (CSXT) launches the first amateur rocket to cross the Karman Line, achieving an altitude of over 100Km, necessary for a launch vehicle to be considered as having achieved a space flight.

  • 2009 – JP Aerospace performs the suborbital launch of an armchair for Toshiba’s Space Chair advertising campaign, marking the first instance of vertically rocket-propelled furniture.
